Thrillers which appeal to the female audiences generally have the main character as a female. This instantly allows the audience to relate to the character due to her being of the same sex. The setup of the film will usually be based around passionate love of some sort. For example, a mothers love for her child or love for a male figure. The vicious action is cut to a minimum keeping the gore to a substantial level. Thrillers are types of films known to promote intense excitement, suspense and a high level of anticipation. Some of the earliest 'thrillers' were Harold Lloyd's comic Safety Last (1923), Edward Sutherland's crime/horror thriller Murders in the Zoo (1933) and many more. No list of thriller films can be complete without the mention of English film-maker/director Alfred Hitchcock, known as The Master of Suspense Thrillers. Hitchcock helped to shape the modern-day thriller genre, beginning with his early silent film The Lodger (1926). His next thriller was Blackmail (1929), his first sound film (but also released in a silent version). One of Hitchcock's most famous thrillers would of course be Psycho (1960). Since 1923, the perception of thriller films is extremely different, thriller movies in this day and age can almost be related to any topic and the main character doesn't necessarily have to be killed off.
